A dumpster left entirely on private property, such as your own driveway, does not need a City permit. Once it touches a road, boulevard, or sidewalk, Hamilton's Temporary Lane and Sidewalk Occupancy Permit applies, administered by the Corridor Management office. Restricted lane occupancy costs $63.55 per lane per day, unrestricted lane occupancy is $63.55 per 14 days, and sidewalk closures run $137.60 per 14 days. Applications need at least 5 days' lead time and are paid by Visa or Mastercard.

Hamilton's Solid Waste Management By-law 20-221 excludes construction and demolition debris from curbside pickup, including brick, concrete, ceramic tile, soil, rock, and pressure-treated lumber. The City's own garbage page confirms bricks, concrete, and drywall are not picked up curbside, which is the main reason renovation and demolition jobs in Hamilton rely on a rented dumpster rather than weekly collection.

By-law 20-221 bars items such as hazardous waste, tires, scrap metal, propane tanks and gas cylinders, and tree stumps from regular collection or drop-off bins. Household hazardous waste, including corrosive, poisonous, explosive, and flammable products, must never go in a dumpster or down a drain; it has to be dropped off free at a Community Recycling Centre, limited to 40 kg or 40 L, 8 fluorescent tubes, and 1 mercury thermostat per visit.

Hamilton operates three public drop-off Community Recycling Centres: Dundas CRC at 27 Olympic Drive, Kenora CRC at 460 Kenora Avenue, and Mountain CRC at 37 Kilbride Road. All three are open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm, closed Sundays and holidays, and accept garbage, scrap metal, appliances, shingles, wood, and yard waste. Trailers are not permitted at any CRC. Garbage and shingles carry a minimum fee of $11.50 up to 99 kg, then $14 per additional 100 kg, while recycling and separated scrap metal are free.

Placing a bin fully on your own driveway means skipping the Corridor Management permit and its lane fees, so the real sizing question is matching capacity to the job — a kitchen gut, a roofing tear-off, and a full basement cleanout each produce a different weight and volume of debris. Because Hamilton's Community Recycling Centres charge a flat minimum fee up to 99 kilograms and then scale per 100 kilograms above that, an oversized bin for a small job risks paying twice: once for the rental, and again if the extra weight crosses into the next fee tier at drop-off.
