Edmonton's river valley splits the city into a patchwork of older mature neighbourhoods and newer suburbs, and the width of the lot usually tells you which one you're in — older infill streets in areas like Ritchie or Bonnie Doon sit much tighter than the sprawling driveways further out. Winters here run long, and a hard freeze changes how debris behaves in a bin, from frozen soil to brittle shingles. Renovation season tends to compress into a short spring and summer window once the ground thaws.

Renting a bin in Edmonton

Edmonton runs one of the more advanced waste management systems in the country, built around a large integrated processing centre and a network of neighbourhood drop-off points. Here is what the city requires around permits, disposal, and material restrictions before a bin lands on your property.

Sources: Edmonton Eco Stations; City of Edmonton OSCAM Permit Request; City of Edmonton — Waste Bin, POD or SeaCan on City Roads; City of Edmonton — Waste Management Centre location and hours; City of Edmonton — EWMC accepted items and disposal fees

Placing a commercial waste bin on a public road or boulevard requires an On-Street Construction and Maintenance (OSCAM) Permit, applied for through the City of Edmonton's self-serve portal or by contacting roaduse.permit@edmonton.ca. Processing takes about 6 business days on average, so plan ahead, especially during the busy spring and summer months. Bins on public roads must be retro-reflective or paired with temporary traffic control, in line with Edmonton's Traffic Bylaw 5590 obstruction provisions. A daily placement fee has been approved but is on hold until the city announces an implementation date.

The Edmonton Waste Management Centre accepts residential and non-residential waste, with different rates and rules. The current City table lists non-residential waste at $102 per tonne with a $40 minimum, and residential waste at $72 per tonne with a $20 minimum, subject to listed exceptions. Waste brought by junk-removal, property-management and landscaping businesses is non-residential. Construction and demolition waste is handled by GFL Environmental's on-site C&D Recycling Facility; contact that operator for its fees and accepted items. Non-residential soil and contaminated soil are on the City's prohibited-material list, so do not assume a clean-fill rate or acceptance.

The EWMC's prohibited-material list includes asbestos, contaminated soil, non-residential soil and several non-residential hazardous-waste categories. These restrictions are different from the separate household drop-off options at Eco Stations, which do not accept hazardous waste from businesses. Confirm specialized disposal arrangements and the hauler's accepted-material list before placing unusual or hazardous material in a rental bin.

Confirm the receiving facility before separating an Edmonton load. The City's current EWMC guidance directs construction and demolition material to GFL Environmental's on-site facility for acceptance and pricing. Residential scrap-metal drop-off is listed as free, but the City warns that chargeable material in a mixed load can cause a disposal fee to apply to the whole load. Ask your hauler whether separately sorted materials change your quote; do not assume a universal concrete or asphalt tipping rate.

Edmonton Waste Management Centre — the City lists 250 Aurum Road NE. Recycling and waste disposal hours are Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and weekends and holidays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the facility is closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Check current notices before travelling. Eco Stations — Coronation is closed for expansion, with reopening anticipated in spring 2027. Ambleside, Kennedale and Strathcona are the other listed locations. Check the Eco Station page for current access, accepted items, vehicle restrictions and fees; business hazardous waste is not accepted there.

Spring cleanup season, from April through June, is Edmonton's busiest booking period — reserve a bin 5 to 7 days ahead if your project falls in that window. Wider suburban driveways generally accommodate 20 to 30-yard bins without clearance problems, though older infill lots may not. For winter rentals, confirm with your hauler that frozen ground and snow won't complicate delivery or pickup.

Tips for renting in Edmonton

Avoid surprises with quick tips our haulers wish every customer knew.

  • If a bin needs to sit on a city road, apply for an On-Street Construction and Maintenance (OSCAM) Permit before delivery. Bins on the street must be retro-reflective or have temporary traffic control signage placed nearby, per Edmonton's Traffic Bylaw.

  • Alberta's 5% GST is the only tax applied to an Edmonton dumpster rental — there is no added provincial sales tax, so it's the one rate to budget for on top of the hauler's quote.

  • If your property has a wide driveway or lot, consider a 30-yard bin for large projects — per-yard pricing often improves with size, and Edmonton's suburban lots can typically accommodate the larger footprint.

Questions about renting in Edmonton

Straightforward answers about dumpster rentals, delivery windows, and what you can toss.

Request quotes from the haulers shown above for an exact price. Alberta charges no provincial sales tax, so the only tax you'll see added to the bin size, weight allowance, and rental length that set the base rate is 5% GST.

Placing it on a public road or boulevard requires an On-Street Construction and Maintenance (OSCAM) Permit from the City of Edmonton. Apply through the city's self-serve permitting portal or ask your hauler to handle it — a daily fee for street placement has been approved but remains on hold until the city gives advance notice.

Confirm the hauler's accepted materials and receiving facility before loading. Edmonton's EWMC prohibits asbestos, contaminated soil and several non-residential hazardous-material categories. Eco Stations have a separate accepted-items list and do not accept hazardous waste from businesses. Household drop-off guidance does not establish what a commercial rental bin can carry.

A 20-yard bin handles most residential renovation and cleanout projects in Edmonton. Smaller garage or basement cleanouts typically only need a 12 or 14-yard bin. Edmonton's wider suburban driveways generally accommodate larger bins without clearance issues, though older infill lots may not.

Standard rental periods in Edmonton run 5 to 7 days. Most haulers offer extensions for $10 to $20 per extra day. For a longer construction project, ask your hauler about weekly or bi-weekly pricing, which is often more cost-effective than repeated short extensions.
