A bin kept on private property (a driveway, yard, or laneway you own) needs no City permit. One placed on a public street or lane does, and the City requires your hauler — not you directly — to apply on your behalf. An inspector confirms there's no viable storage space on your property, the container is under 3 cubic metres, and it won't block vehicle or pedestrian traffic. Once approved, the City bills the hauler an annual fee for the placement; ask your hauler for the current amount, since the City does not publish a fixed public rate. Improper maintenance or an unpermitted container can lead to impoundment or a fine of up to $10,000.

Metro Vancouver sets regional tipping fees that flow into every hauler's pricing. As of July 2026, mixed garbage runs $162 per tonne for loads between 1 and 7.99 tonnes (with a per-load minimum), yard trimmings and clean wood are $139 per tonne, and gypsum (drywall) ranges from $158 to $210 per tonne depending on whether it's new or used material.
