Vancouver's mix of narrow character-home lots, laneway suites, and steep North Shore driveways means bin placement takes a bit more planning than in most cities. Between Metro Vancouver's strict disposal-ban rules and the City's street-use permitting, a little upfront research on sizing and access saves a lot of hassle on delivery day.

Renting a bin in Vancouver

Vancouver combines some of the tightest residential lots in Canada with strict Metro Vancouver disposal-ban rules and a City permitting process for any bin placed on a public street. Here is what actually governs permits, banned materials, and disposal costs in the city.

Sources: City of Vancouver — Storing a Waste Container on City Property; Metro Vancouver — Tipping Fees; Metro Vancouver — Disposal Ban Program

A bin kept on private property (a driveway, yard, or laneway you own) needs no City permit. One placed on a public street or lane does, and the City requires your hauler — not you directly — to apply on your behalf. An inspector confirms there's no viable storage space on your property, the container is under 3 cubic metres, and it won't block vehicle or pedestrian traffic. Once approved, the City bills the hauler an annual fee for the placement; ask your hauler for the current amount, since the City does not publish a fixed public rate. Improper maintenance or an unpermitted container can lead to impoundment or a fine of up to $10,000.

Metro Vancouver sets regional tipping fees that flow into every hauler's pricing. As of July 2026, mixed garbage runs $162 per tonne for loads between 1 and 7.99 tonnes (with a per-load minimum), yard trimmings and clean wood are $139 per tonne, and gypsum (drywall) ranges from $158 to $210 per tonne depending on whether it's new or used material. These rates are set by Metro Vancouver's Tipping Fee Bylaw and apply regardless of which hauler you use — ask your hauler which of these are already built into your quote.

Metro Vancouver bans a defined list of recyclable materials from disposal, including corrugated cardboard, clean wood, food waste, yard trimmings, beverage containers, and recyclable plastics and glass — a surcharge of 50% of the tipping fee applies to the entire load if these turn up in the garbage. A separate list of hazardous and operational-impact materials — including gypsum, asbestos, propane tanks, and mattresses — carries its own minimum surcharge and generally needs a dedicated bin or drop-off. Ask your hauler how they handle mixed loads before you fill the bin.

Gypsum (drywall) is treated as a hazardous/operational-impact material under Metro Vancouver's rules rather than a standard recyclable, and used gypsum carries a higher tipping rate than new gypsum. Drywall removed from older buildings is commonly subject to asbestos testing requirements before disposal — confirm with your contractor or hauler whether your specific building's age triggers this. Clean concrete, asphalt, and soil have their own handling rules and are generally cheaper to dispose of when kept separate and uncontaminated.

Vancouver South Transfer Station — 377 West Kent Ave North, Vancouver. Accepts garbage, yard trimmings, and clean wood; left-turn access restrictions apply on Kent Ave North. Vancouver Zero Waste Centre — 8588 Yukon St, Vancouver. Open daily; recycling and small residential drop-off. North Shore Transfer Station — 30 Riverside Dr, North Vancouver. United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre — 995 United Boulevard, Coquitlam. Confirm current hours before visiting, since Metro Vancouver facilities adjust seasonally.

Vancouver's standard 33-foot residential lot, plus the narrower driveways common on laneway and character-home properties, makes a 10 or 12-yard bin the practical default for most single-family renovation projects — measure your access space, including overhead wires and tree canopy, before ordering anything larger. Rain is a real cost factor here: a bin left uncovered through a wet week can pick up significant water weight in materials like drywall or insulation, pushing a load over its included weight allowance. Keep a tarp or lid on the bin between loads.

Tips for renting in Vancouver

Avoid surprises with quick tips our haulers wish every customer knew.

  • A dumpster on your own driveway or yard needs no City permit; one placed on a public street or lane does, and your hauler — not you — applies for it. Confirm with your hauler up front which category your job falls into.

  • Street-placed bins must show the building address and the hauler's contact info, stay locked except when in direct use, and remain in the approved spot. The City can impound a container that violates these terms, so check in on it if the job runs long.

  • For Vancouver jobs, sort cardboard, clean wood and food waste from garbage. Metro Vancouver’s 50% tipping-fee surcharge has thresholds: over 5% of the load by weight or volume for banned recyclables other than food waste and expanded polystyrene, and over 25% for food waste. Expanded polystyrene has a separate surcharge rule.

Questions about renting in Vancouver

Straightforward answers about dumpster rentals, delivery windows, and what you can toss.

Request quotes from the haulers shown above; the all-in cost depends on bin size, weight allowance and rental length, plus GST and PST. Metro Vancouver's tipping fees are among the higher rates in Canada, so ask each hauler what disposal charges are already built into their quote versus billed separately.

Yes, if the bin sits on a City street or lane rather than on your own property. Your hauler applies to the City on your behalf, not you directly, and the container must stay under 3 cubic metres. The City bills the hauler an annual fee once the placement is approved, and can issue a fine of up to $10,000 for improper maintenance or an unpermitted container.

Street-placed containers must display the building address and the hauler's name and phone number, stay clean and odour-free, remain closed and locked except when in direct use, and stay in the approved spot. The City can impound a container that breaks these rules, on top of billing cleanup costs to the responsible party.

Fit the bin to your lot, not the project. Vancouver's classic 33-foot lots and laneway-suite driveways are often too narrow for a 20-yard bin without blocking the sidewalk or a neighbour's access, so a 10 or 12-yard container is the safer default for most single-family renovations; larger new-construction and multi-unit teardown jobs are the main case for going bigger.

Rental length is set by your hauler's agreement, typically in the range of about a week, and if the bin sits on a City street the street-use approval also specifies how long it can stay there. Confirm the included days and any extension or overage fees with your hauler before booking.
