North Vancouver spans two separate municipalities, the City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver, so a job on one side of the boundary can fall under different street-use rules than one just blocks away. Bin size, drop-off timing, and site access all shape what a rental costs. Request quotes from the haulers shown above to compare pricing for your project.

Renting a bin in North Vancouver

North Vancouver is unusual in that the name covers two separate municipalities sitting side by side, the City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver, each with its own hall, bylaws, and street-use paperwork. Here is what to check before a rented dumpster lands on your property or your street.

Sources: City of North Vancouver - Street Use Permits; District of North Vancouver - Container on street permit; District of North Vancouver - Permits for road use; Metro Vancouver - North Shore Recycling and Waste Centre; Metro Vancouver - Tipping Fee

In the City of North Vancouver, placing a bulk refuse container on a City street uses the Street Container Permit Application. Send the completed application to StreetUsePermit@cnv.org; both the application and payment must be completed 10 full business days before the permit starts. The company doing the work or supplying the container needs $5 million CAD liability insurance naming the City as additional insured before a permit is issued. This City process does not establish the District of North Vancouver's requirements.

The District of North Vancouver, the larger surrounding municipality that stretches from the Lower Lonsdale border up into the mountains, runs its own Container on Street Permit and broader road-use permit program for anything occupying a district road, boulevard, or lane. Because the city and district are legally separate local governments, a permit from one does not cover placement on the other's streets, so double-check your civic address against the boundary line first.

Metro Vancouver operates the North Shore Recycling and Waste Centre at 30 Riverside Drive, serving both the city and the district. It is open weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays and statutory holidays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a paid side for garbage and construction debris and a free side for common recyclables, batteries, electronics, and household hazardous items.

Metro Vancouver's regional tipping fee applies at the North Shore facility: standard garbage runs from $136 to $182 per tonne depending on load size, and construction and demolition processing residual — waste remaining after recycling recovery at a private processing facility — is billed at $194 per tonne. The $5 transaction fee is included in the minimum charge: $15 outside peak hours or $25 during weekday peak hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., excluding statutory holidays.

The regional disposal-ban program separates its surcharges by material category: banned hazardous, operational-impact and product-stewardship items carry an $80 minimum, with possible removal and cleanup costs; banned recyclable materials carry a 50% tipping-fee surcharge on the entire load. Recycling and special-disposal streams should be kept out of general garbage.

Clean wood and yard trimmings are listed at $139 per tonne and new gypsum at $158 per tonne, with separate minimums and acceptance limits; these are lower than the $182 small-load garbage rate but higher than the $136 rate for garbage loads of 8 tonnes or more, so compare the applicable material category, load weight and minimum fee before assuming a saving.

Tips for renting in North Vancouver

Avoid surprises with quick tips our haulers wish every customer knew.

  • Confirm whether your address falls under the City of North Vancouver or the District of North Vancouver before applying for any street permit, since the two municipalities run separate offices and forms.

  • Keep the bin fully on your driveway or private property whenever the lot allows it, which avoids the street permit process on either side of North Vancouver entirely.

  • Ask your hauler to route straight to the North Shore Recycling and Waste Centre on Riverside Drive, since it is the shared transfer station for both the city and district.

Questions about renting in North Vancouver

Straightforward answers about dumpster rentals, delivery windows, and what you can toss.

Costs depend on bin size, drop-off timing, and site access — request quotes from the haulers shown above to compare pricing for your project. Expect GST at 5% added to whatever base rate they quote, since BC does not charge PST on dumpster rental services.

It depends which North Vancouver you mean. The City of North Vancouver requires a Street Use Permit (sometimes called a street container permit) for any bin placed on a city street, while the District of North Vancouver, a separate municipality covering the surrounding area, has its own Container on Street Permit. Both exist because the road allowance is public property, and a bin left there without approval can be ticketed or towed.

The City of North Vancouver is a compact municipality with its own council, and its Street Use Permit process is handled through cnv.org. The District of North Vancouver is a larger, separate municipality bordering the city, and its street or highway placement rules run through dnv.org. Check your civic address against the two municipal boundaries before applying, since the wrong office will simply bounce your application.

North Shore Recycling and Waste Centre is at 30 Riverside Drive. Metro Vancouver lists garbage, clean wood, yard trimmings and new gypsum with separate rates and acceptance limits. Construction and demolition processing residual is a distinct category for material left after a private processing facility recovers recyclables. Confirm that your load and vehicle qualify before travelling.

Metro Vancouver applies an $80 minimum surcharge, plus potential removal or cleanup costs, to garbage loads containing banned hazardous, operational-impact or product-stewardship materials. Banned recyclables instead attract a surcharge of 50% of the tipping fee on the whole load. Keep these streams separate from general garbage and use the designated recycling or disposal options.

There is no fixed municipal limit for a bin sitting fully on private property in either the city or the district, so rental length comes down to what your hauler quotes. A bin placed on the street, however, is bound by the dates approved on your Street Use Permit or Container on Street Permit.
