Any bin, container, or material placed on a Cambridge street needs a Highway Occupancy Permit, and the city only allows this kind of street storage between April 1 and October 31. The application fee is $300 plus HST, and processing takes anywhere from 3 business days for a job with no lane closure to 10 business days for a full closure. You'll need a certificate of insurance naming the City of Cambridge as additional insured, plus traffic control set up to Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 standards. Applications go through the Service Cambridge desk at 50 Dickson Street.

Cambridge sits inside the Region of Waterloo waste system, and the Region operates its own Cambridge Waste Management Site at 201 Savage Drive. It's open Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm for commercial drop-off, with residential hours running Monday to Saturday 7am to 6pm. Only waste generated within Waterloo Region is accepted, and the Region doesn't run commercial collection directly, which is why haulers exist to bridge that gap.

Tires were banned from Region of Waterloo landfill sites in 1988, cardboard followed in 1991, and electronic waste has been kept out of both landfill and curbside collection since 2005. Commercial or industrial hazardous waste isn't accepted at Region sites under any circumstance and is treated as a serious offence under provincial rules, so it needs its own disposal channel entirely.

Effective April 1, 2026, general refuse, drywall, and wood pallets are billed at $120 per tonne, while recyclables, organics, and yard waste run $82.50 per tonne. Every load carries a $15 minimum charge, and a mixed load — say, drywall tangled with clean fill — gets billed at whichever material rate is highest, so separating debris types before the bin is hauled away can meaningfully cut the bill.

Large demolition loads need 24 hours' advance notice before drop-off at the Region site, arranged by email or fax ahead of time. If the job runs through summer or fall, remember the Highway Occupancy Permit's placement window closes at the end of October, so a bin can't legally sit on a Cambridge street once winter approaches.
