A work permit is required from the City of Kitchener before occupying any part of a road, sidewalk, or boulevard, including for a placed dumpster. Apply through the city's online portal at least 5 business days ahead for most of the city, or 10 business days ahead for downtown Kitchener, and include a certificate of insurance. Fees are billed per the city's Fee Schedule after the work is completed. If the street in question is a regional road rather than a city one, a separate application through the Region of Waterloo is needed.

A rented bin typically comes with a set rental period and an included tonnage allowance built into the price, and debris beyond that allowance is billed per tonne at the hauler's current rate. Concrete, drywall, and roofing shingles are dense enough to hit that limit well before a bin looks full, so confirming the overage rate before delivery avoids a surprise charge once the load is weighed.

The Region of Waterloo runs the local disposal system rather than the City of Kitchener, and it doesn't offer commercial collection directly, so haulers route loads to the Region's own sites: the Waterloo Waste Management Site at 925 Erb Street West and the Cambridge Waste Management Site at 201 Savage Drive. Both accept general refuse, construction debris, and yard waste from Waterloo Region sources only, with commercial hours Monday to Friday.

Region of Waterloo tipping rates effective April 2026 run $120 per tonne for general refuse, drywall, and pallets, and $82.50 per tonne for recyclables, organics, and yard waste, with a $15 minimum per load. Mixed loads get billed at the highest applicable rate, so sorting materials by type ahead of the trip keeps the bill down.

Region of Waterloo bylaw bans tires and cardboard from both the Cambridge and Waterloo landfill sites, and electronic waste has been kept out of landfill and curbside collection since 2005. Grass clippings are also excluded from residential curbside pickup. Commercial and industrial hazardous waste isn't accepted at Region sites at all and needs a licensed handler.

Because Region of Waterloo charges less per tonne for recyclables, organics, and yard waste than for general refuse, a Kitchener job that keeps clean wood, cardboard, and yard debris separate from the general waste stream tends to come back with a smaller tipping bill, particularly on larger renovation and demolition loads.
