Once any part of it sits on the road, sidewalk, or boulevard, the City of Peterborough's Temporary Road Occupancy process appears to be the applicable permit, handled through the Clerk's Office at 705-742-7777 or clerks@peterborough.ca, though whether it specifically covers bin placement should be confirmed with them directly. The city's published materials don't list a flat fee schedule for this specific use case, so confirming cost and lead time directly with the Clerk's Office before delivery is the safer route.

Peterborough jobs range from a single-room cleanout to a full home renovation, and the right bin size depends on both the volume of debris and its weight, since landfill fees are charged by the tonne once the load leaves the property. As with any rental, confirm what rental period and tonnage allowance is bundled into the quoted price so an unexpectedly heavy load of concrete or shingles doesn't turn into a surprise overage charge.

The Peterborough Waste Management Facility at 1260 Bensfort Road, about 6 kilometres south of the city in Otonabee-South Monaghan, is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., closed Sundays and statutory holidays. Only waste generated within the City and County of Peterborough is accepted, so loads from outside the area need a different facility.

Construction and demolition debris costs $150 per tonne over 100 kilograms, or $12 flat for smaller loads. Unsorted waste runs $260 per tonne, considerably more than that $150-per-tonne rate for sorted construction and demolition debris, which rewards separating recyclables and clean debris ahead of the trip. Asbestos is accepted only at $300 per tonne under special handling, and refrigerant-containing appliances add a $25 per-item charge.

Household hazardous waste, including paint, batteries, and electronics, isn't accepted at the Bensfort Road facility at all and instead needs to go to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at 400 Pido Road. Curbside garbage collection separately excludes construction and renovation materials, tires, and anything over roughly 1 metre long or 13.6 kilograms, all of which are better suited to a rented bin or a direct landfill trip.

Because sorted construction and demolition debris is billed at a meaningfully lower per-tonne rate than unsorted waste at the Peterborough landfill, separating shingles, drywall, scrap metal, and cardboard from general debris before drop-off is one of the more direct ways to reduce what a renovation or demolition job costs once the hauler's own bin rate is locked in.
