It's the question everyone asks first: "How much is this going to cost me?" The answer, as you might expect, is "it depends." But don't worry, we're going to break down exactly what it depends on, so you can estimate your costs accurately.

The Short Answer

On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $800 for a standard dumpster rental in Canada.

Factors Affecting Price

Why such a big range? Because sending a truck to drop off a massive 40-yard bin for construction debris is a lot different than dropping off a mini 6-yard bin for some garden clippings.

Here are the main levers that move the price up or down:

1. Dumpster Size

Bigger bins cost more. A 20-yard dumpster will cost more than a 10-yard dumpster.

2. Weight Allowance

The disposal fees at the landfill are based on weight. Renting a bin with a higher included weight limit (e.g. 2 tons vs 1 ton) will cost more upfront.

3. Rental Duration

How long you keep it. 7 days is standard. Keeping it for 14 days or a month will likely increase the price.

4. Location

If you are far from the hauler's yard or the dump, fuel surcharges may apply.

Dumpster Size & Type

Generally, for every 10 yards of size you go up, you might see a price increase of $50-$100.

Also, specialized bins (like clean fill bins for dirt/concrete) are often flat-rate and can be cheaper than mixed waste bins because the material can be recycled or reused easily.

Weight Limits - The Hidden Cost

Be careful! The "base price" of a rental includes a specific amount of weight (the "allowance").

If you go over that weight, you will be charged per tonne for the excess. This is called an "overage fee".

Overweight Example:

You rent a bin for $400 that includes 1 tonne. You put 2 tonnes of debris in it. You will pay the $400 base price PLUS the cost of the extra 1 tonne (usually around $100-$150/tonne depending on your city). Total: $550+.

Rental Duration

Most rentals come with 5-7 days included. If you need it longer, you'll pay a small daily fee (usually $10-$20/day).
